AITA? I’m 19 now, and my parents are suddenly reaching out after more than a decade of silence. I haven’t lived with them since I was 8, and I haven’t spoken to them at all since I was 12—by their choice.

When I was a kid, my parents sent me to live with my grandparents because I was “acting out” while they focused entirely on my medically fragile younger sister. I was ignored, pushed aside, and eventually punished for trying to get attention. After one breaking point, my mom told me she hated me and wanted me gone. My dad dropped me off at my grandparents’ house and said they were done with me.

My grandparents fought for custody. My parents didn’t want me back, but they also didn’t want to pay child support. Contact slowly faded until it stopped entirely. Now, years later, they say they regret everything and want to “talk things through.” They say my sister misses me and that we shouldn’t wait until it’s too late. They also say I wasn’t an angel and need to take responsibility too.

I don’t want to reopen old wounds or rebuild something that never really existed. Am I wrong for refusing to talk to the parents who abandoned me, or is it fair to walk away after so much damage was already done?
