On the top of Mount Benacantil is one of the largest medieval fortresses in Spain - The Santa Barbara Castle, which has been protecting the tranquility of the city of Alicante for many centuries.
The fortress got its name in honor of the holiday of Santa Barbara Day on December 4, 1248, when Prince Alfonso of Castile, the future King Alfonso X the Wise, conquered the fortress from the Moors.
Later, in 1296, an army led by another king, Jaime II, stormed the fortress again, meeting courageous resistance from the defenders under the command of the fortress commandant Nicolas Peris.
According to the existing legend, the last defenders of the fortress fell, protecting every inch of it, and Nicolas Peris died, clutching the sword and the keys to the fortress in his hands. The invaders were able to obtain these keys only by killing him and cutting off his hand. Since then, the symbol of the hand holding the keys has been depicted on the coat of arms of the fortress, as a symbol of the fortitude of its defenders.
It is said that when Peris's hand unclenches and drops the keys, Alicante will be captured by enemies. Since then, the city has never been captured again: neither by the British, in the War of the Spanish Succession, nor by Napoleon when he invaded the Iberian Peninsula.
