In this video essay I explore the dark coming-of-age story of Gon Freecss, the protagonist of the shounen anime and manga hunterxhunter. Gon is a very untypical shounen hero. On his journey with Killua, Kurapika and Leorio he has to learn about th cruelty and moral complexity of the real world. Over each arc, Gon's morality becomes increasingly skewed. Euipped with enormous power, skill and nen abilities, HxH author Togashi explores, what would truly happen to a 12 year old boy wielding to much power, that is thrown into the real world. In the fights of Gon vs Hisoka and later in the chimera ant arc Gon vs Pitou it becomes clear that Gon does not have a positive character arc, but a negative one. His ultimate goal is to find his father Ging and when Gon meets Ging he has ultimatley fulfilled his goal, but in the process has lost his humanity. The gon freecss transformation in his fight vs pitou is in many ways one of the most notorious moments in shounen history. In this context, Gon and Killua as well as Gon and Hisoka have some of the most interestingly written relationships in any manga.
Thus, this hunter x hunter character analysis will be a gon freecss analysis (Gon Freecss Explained), in which i want to explore what makes his character so good.
