Ireland has expanded its forest cover from less than 2% in the early 1900s to about 12% today, with over 800,000 hectares of woodland. Despite this progress, it remains one of the least forested EU countries, so the state continues to offer strong incentives for tree planting, especially native species like oak. Forestry delivers wide environmental, climate, and water-quality benefits, supports biodiversity and recreation, and contributes to national climate goals. It is also an important rural enterprise: roughly half of Ireland’s forests are privately owned, mostly by farmers, and commercial forestry now supplies most domestic timber needs while supporting a strong export market to the UK. With maturing private forests and major sawmill investment, Ireland is positioned to expand its use of home-grown timber in housing and continue growing its export potential.
