"Yeah!"
Happy Birthday to Carlos Santana who was born on this date in 1947!
This might be the best Santana song you've never heard. I'll be honest, I'm not a Santana fan, but I love this song. Not that I listened to much Santana, but I've always had the impression that he did a lot of jamming and guitar soloing, and I'm just not a big fan of that. That's probably the reason I'm not crazy about The Allman Brothers, The Grateful Dead, and most Jazz. If I had to sit through a 5 minute organ solo, a 10 minute guitar solo, followed up by a 20 conga/timbale solo, I'd want to put a bullet in my head. I'm more of a "song" guy... give me an intro, a verse with a great vocal melody, a catchy chorus, an interesting bridge, a guitar solo (only if necessary) and out. This song, pretty much, follows that formula. This album was the first to feature Scottish-English vocalist Alex Ligertwood who I think has an incredible voice. "Winning" is another song off the following album that Alex Ligertwood sings on and that's a great one as well.
Edit: I uploaded this video on Monday night, but scheduled it to be "published" on Carlos' birthday, at 11:45 Tuesday morning. Before the video was published I went back and removed the whole section about what I thought about Santana. After rereading it, I thought that it came across as a little bit negative and I much prefer to talk about the things I like, as opposed to the things I don’t. Anyway, I must not have hit “save” and it was published as I wrote it. I'm not going to remove it now, but I do regret posting the text as I did and I certainly did not mean to offend anyone by my comments. It's a big enough world for all of us to like what we like in peace.
"All I Ever Wanted" by Santana off of the "Marathon" album which came out in 1979 and featured David Margen on bass. There are a couple of cool syncopations going on towards the end of the guitar solo, but it took the drummer a few cycles to get the hang of it... what else is new?
I'm playing the Bruce Thomas Signature "Profile" bass that I really haven't put down since I got it and I'm using a SansAmp Para-Driver Ver. 1 for my EQ. I got from The Bass Centre in Jolly Old England. They even posted my review and video on their website. Click "Customer Comments" if you'd like to see it - http://www.basscentre.com/british-bas...
