Theme/Message:
The theme of Uncle Tom’s Cabin is oppressing people by owning them is inhumane and morally wrong. Slavery causes more than surface level suffering i.e. physical abuse; it includes things like separation of families and degradation of the human spirit and moral. Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote this novel in order to exemplify the horrors of slavery to the general American public, but she also relates suffering in slavery and suffering in general to the Bible; saying that those who suffer will be blessed.
Stylistic Wizardry:
The style of Stowe in Uncle Tom’s Cabin is sermon like, she wants to convince members of society that everyone has meaning. This is exemplified in the many monologue and soliloquies in this book which tells individual’s stories, working to convince people of the abolition of slavery; thus getting Stowe's point across clearly and effectively.
Similarity to The Color Purple:
This book has similar themes to The Color Purple because they both deal with the oppression of people based on both race and gender. In The Color Purple Celie suffers through physical and emotional abuse; she must learn how love and suffering work in her world. In Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Tom must learn to suffer through slavery. These books are similar because they both display prolonged suffering throughout both main character’s lives.
Similarity to Bread Givers: The book bread givers is very similar to the book Uncle Tom’s cabin because both address issues at the time in the United States of America. Ain the book Bread Givers the main character is a woman and shares her story of being by society and her family. On the other hand, the book, Uncle Tom’s Cabin addresses and brings attention to the issue of slavery in the United States through the stories about slavery that Stowe heard.
