On November 17, 2025, two newly discovered organ works by Johann Sebastian Bach—Ciacona and Fuga in D minor, BWV 1178, and Ciacona in G minor, BWV 1179—were premiered at the St. Thomas Church in Leipzig, their first performance in over 300 years.
The discovery of these works began in 1992 when Peter Wollny—now executive director of Bach Archive Leipzig—uncovered two unusual manuscripts while working on his dissertation. It took years of investigation to attribute the pieces definitively to Bach, who likely composed them as a teenager or in his 20s.
Shortly afterwards, the Chamber Music Society added them to their slate of works for their annual Baroque Festival, the first major concert hall performance of the newly unearthed repertoire. The pieces were performed by renowned organist Paolo Bordignon on Alice Tully Hall’s historic 4,200-pipe organ.
Performed on December 6 & 7, 2025
Directed and edited by Andrew Alden
Lydia Cornett, Camera Operator
Edwin Huet, Sound Engineer
