This is a scene from The Caesars (1968), a black-and-white Granada Television drama made for ITV, written and produced by Philip Mackie, and directed by Derek Bennett.
It’s André Morell as Emperor Tiberius and Donald Eccles as his old friend Marcus Cocceius Nerva.
In this scene from Episode 5: “Caligula”, after Agrippina starves herself to de@th, Nerva basically puts Tiberius on trial. But it’s not for incompetence, it’s for what absolute power has done to him, and it ends with a brutal, unanswered line.
I personally think this is one of the most powerful dialogues I’ve ever seen. Not only was it extremely well written, the emotions from both actors are exceptional. I haven’t seen Tiberius depicted as sympathetically as he is in this show.
What’s more, this show came out years before I, Claudius and Caligula, where Tiberius was seen negatively, albeit from outstanding performances from George Baker and Peter O’Toole, respectively.
I hope more people see this scene and check out this series. Another YouTuber actually remastered the series in HD because the original version didn’t look good on DVD, which is a testament to how good this show is, despite how overlooked it is. I hope to change that; I think it’s one of the best shows about Ancient Rome.
