The statue of Payne Stewart at Pinehurst No. 2 normally graces the 18th green.
But for the week of the 124th U.S. Open, it’s been placed at the entrance to the grounds to allow for more visitors.
It’s a reminder of the moment, and the man, who captivated this course and this country at the 1999 U.S. Open.
“It's really cool to go and see him at the see the statue,” Mike Hicks said.
For Hicks, this statue is more than just a monument. It’s a way to catch up with an old friend.
“It was a bit emotional on Monday,” he said.
Twenty-five years ago, Hicks caddied for Payne Stewart when he won the U.S. Open.
“I knew when to give him a kick in the rear end. And when not to say anything,” Hicks said. “We were close. We were good friends.”
Before leaving for the course that championship Sunday 25 years ago, Hicks had a premonition.
