Terceira is one of the Azores’ Islands within the Atlantic Ocean situated around fifteen hundred kilometres from the Portuguese mainland with Angra Do Heroismo as its capital. In the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries it was an important port of call for numerous trading ships and a junction for three continents. As in Europe, the foul air of mediaeval times once filled through the city’s narrow alleys but eventually a beautiful Renaissance city was created along with many fine churches. In the centre of the old town is the Jardim Duque Da Terceira, a well laid out garden with tangled pathways, fountains and an abundance of flowers. According to age old tradition almost each one of the island’s communes has its own Tourada Á Corda, a non-bloody bullfight during which the men await the bulls in the alleys and each bull has a rope tied around its neck to facilitate capture.
