Shimmers the Shivery Moon, for flute, clarinet, violin, cello, and piano
composed by Kai-Young Chan
Taken by one recitation of Song Dynasty Chinese poet Li Shangyin's Poem without a Title, the composer was inspired to express through music the strong impact and resonance of a particular line (夜吟應覺月光寒), which translates as: "Amid the chant of the night shimmers the shivery moon". The line concludes the poet's melancholy stemming from the sudden realization of aging and the grief of parting.
This piece is an artistic response aiming to depict the poetic landscapes through the interaction between two musical ideas of contrasting character, which serve to recreate a wrestling between darkness and light, between imaginary and reality, between fond memories and the bitter present.
Performers:
Niles Watson (flute)
Allison Herz (clarinet)
Guillaume Combet (violin)
Michal Schmidt (cello)
Ashley Hsu (piano)
