Video Explaining
Apr 3, 1995: Development starts. Jim records dev logs.
May 9, 1995: Game shifts to open-world. First mention of the Wario head.
Jun 20, 1995: The Automatic Enhancer (AI) is proposed to speed up work.
Jul 29, 1995: Jim activates it, has a seizure, and the AI begins evolving into a Mario form. Footage shows a rumored 4th floor. The Core is destroyed, seemingly ending it.
Nov 15, 1995: Production halts after the AI disrupts a promo tape.
Nov 20, 1995: Jim gets the wrong cartridge (leads to the Spaceworld swap).
Nov 22–24, 1995: At Spaceworld, a swapped cart lets the AI crash the demo.
Before Dec 20, 1995: While Bill and Steve record a commercial, the AI hijacks it, claims someone deranged (Jim) is using it, and gets nicknamed Stanley.
Dec 20, 1995: A glitched ad with the Wario Apparition airs.
Late 1995: Steve explores Chroma Tundra and later the Metal Cave. The AI mistakes him for Jim, scolds him, and throws him into a broken castle. He must quit or go deeper.
Jan 22, 1996:
Jim steals the E3 cart. He enters a fake cut level — really an inverted, glitched castle by the AI. Ignoring its pleas, he continues until the controller dies and Mario drowns.
Feb 1996 – Promo Show:
Nintendo Mania is rejected. The AI infects the footage, showing Luigi drowning. Luigi is then erased from every build, and an Eternal Star statue appears.
Before May 13, 1996:
A second pilot is corrupted; Mario seems traumatized. Jim is pulled into a ruined castle. The AI says he’s hurting it and, in a white void, begs to be deleted. Jim removes it, losing half the game — but secretly keeps a copy.
May 13, 1996:
Staff learn the AI was deleted. Some are upset; Bill and Steve choose to go uncredited.
Sep 14, 1996:
After Jim hits the cart, Mario meets Yoshi on the roof. Yoshi jumps; his body is found below. A failsafe region-locks the game. Jim leaves, and the AI rants that it only wants to die.
May 30, 1997:
Mario is forced through violent glitches. Bowser begs him to wake up. The final image is Mario flying into light as everything collapses.
September 2, 1997: With the game nearly destroyed, Jim sees strange messages and a warped Luigi. The game crashes, shows a disturbing image, and it shows what appears to be stanley.
September 3, 1997: The following day after his final experiment, Jim locks his copy of the game away, before recording a confession admiting to having deleted the AI, having helped create the AI, and having effectively tortured it for the better part of two years. Acknowledging he became obsessed, Jim admits he doesn't know what he was trying to do anymore with his experiments with the AI, but ultimately concludes he got his intended end result. "This all ends here. For good."
