The temple, according to its priest is over 500 years old, The temple was built in 1537 by Kempe Gowda under the Vijayanagara empire in the Vijayanagara architectural style, he also founded the city of Bengaluru. According to some, he found a stone with the engraving of Lord Ganesha while he was walking. Then he ordered the sculptors to cut the Ganapathi idol out of a single stone.
Lord Ganesh is decorated in different ways. The most captivating one is Benne Alankara where the idol is smeared with a whopping 100 kg of butter. Sometimes, even dry grapes and almonds are also fixed on the butter layer. A significant aspect of this alankara (decoration) is that in spite of the warmth inside the garbha gruha (sanctum sanctorum), the butter does not melt
