The simulations show how a well-placed obstacle in front of an emergency exit can help to prevent clogging [1], i.e. the evacuation process coming to a sudden arrest due to geometrical frustration. Although this procedure can not prevent clogging for specific situations, it is statistically beneficial to introduce an obstacle at a carefully chosen distance to the exit. The mechanism can be understood by considering how the obstacle helps to moderate the flow rate close to the exit. Furthermore, the individual agents also experience a torque causing pedestrians to turn to their preferred direction of movement.
The pedestrians being evacuated in these simulations are modeled as discrete bodies subject to driving and damping forces.
