Multi-Billion Dollar Solar Plant Fails in Mojave Desert — and is now facing decommissioning beginning in 2026. This video explores the rise and decline of the Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System, once the world’s largest solar-thermal power facility near the California–Nevada border.
Built on five square miles of Mojave Desert land and costing $2.2 billion, Ivanpah opened in 2014 as a breakthrough concentrated solar power (CSP) project backed by the U.S. Department of Energy and private investors. Using nearly 170,000 mirrors to generate steam-powered electricity, it supplied energy to PG&E and Southern California Edison under contracts originally running to 2039. However, PG&E has moved to terminate contracts for two units due to high costs and competition from cheaper photovoltaic solar, with closures slated to begin in 2026 pending regulatory approval.
Environmental controversy — including wildlife impacts and habitat disruption — has further shaped its legacy. While one unit may continue operating, the site could ultimately be repurposed for photovoltaic solar development.
