“Caged Bird” from Shaker, Why Don't You Sing? Copyright © 1983 by Maya Angelou.
Maya Angelou's poem, "I Know Why Caged Bird Sings," is a self-reflective poem that probes and at the same time gives voice to social issues such as racial hatred and discrimination by employing the striking imagery of a 'free bird' representing 'the white' and a 'caged bird' representing 'the black'. The poem leaves an indelible impression by demonstrating how oppressed people continue to struggle and advance toward dignity and freedom despite being repeatedly and violently pushed back. But who says it must always be seen in this light? How about if the caged bird is the female gender while the free bird is the male counter and the social sensibility discussed revolves around the question of equality in a patriarchal society?
