The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore (Karnataka) has released the official PhD Admission Notification for the Academic Year 2026-27 (Session starting August 2026) inviting applications for regular PhD, M.Tech (Research), External Registration Programme (ERP), and interdisciplinary research areas. The online application process starts on 11 February 2026 and the last date to apply for research programmes is 23 March 2026, while ERP applications close on 31 March 2026.

To be eligible for IISc PhD admission 2026-27, candidates must possess at least a second-class Bachelor’s (4-year) or Master’s degree in relevant disciplines such as Engineering, Science, Economics, Management, Computer Science, Agriculture, Pharmacy, Medical Sciences, or related fields. Applicants must typically have a valid GATE / NET-JRF / GPAT or other approved national-level fellowship qualification, depending on the discipline and mode of entry. Candidates appearing in the final semester and completing degree requirements by 31 July 2026 are also eligible to apply.

Major subjects include Astronomy & Astrophysics, Biochemistry, Ecological Sciences, High Energy Physics, Mathematics, Physics, Microbiology & Cell Biology, Neurosciences, Organic Chemistry, Materials Research, Solid State & Structural Chemistry, Aerospace Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science & Automation, Electrical Engineering, Electronic Systems Engineering, Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Nano Science & Engineering, Computational & Data Sciences, Management Studies, Bioengineering, Energy, Mathematical Sciences, Climate Change, Cyber Physical Systems, Water Research, Brain Computation & Data Science, and Public Health. Seats/vacancies are department-wise and announced separately on the IISc admission portal.
The selection process involves shortlisting based on national entrance test performance followed by written test / interview, depending on the department. Final admission is based primarily on interview performance.
