Spanish Royals Visit La Palma in Wake of Volcano Eruption

Описание: Spanish King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia arrived Thursday in La Palma to visit people who have been displaced by a volcano eruption on Spain’s Canary Islands, which destroyed some 350 homes.

The Spanish royals also met with Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who has pledged to speed up access to financial aid to rebuild damaged infrastructure.

After saluting emergency teams the royals were due to visit the affected area Thursday evening.

The advance of lava from the volcanic eruption has slowed significantly, raising fears that it might fan out further and wreak more destruction instead of flowing out into the sea.

The uncertainty over what the volcano and lava would do left many residents on the western side of the island of 85,000 people in limbo.

The National Geographic Institute said it recorded a minor 2.6-magnitude earthquake around noon local time. Scientists say the lava flows could last for weeks or months.

The lava now covers 166 hectares (410 acres) and has forced the evacuation of almost 7,000 people.
