Ranipet is an industrial town in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, known for its significant leather and manufacturing industries. Located on the northern bank of the Palar River, it serves as the administrative headquarters of the Ranipet district. The name "Ranipet" translates to "Queen's Colony," in honor of a queen's devotion.
History
Origin: In 1771, Sadut-ulla-khan, the Nawab of Carnatic, founded the town to honor the youthful widow of Gingee's Raja Desingh, who committed sati (ritual suicide) upon her husband's death. A memorial was also built for her on the banks of the Palar river.
British influence: The town's prominence increased with the establishment of a European cantonment during British rule. A large section of the horse-mounted military was stationed here.
Industrial heritage: Ranipet was part of South India's first rail operation, which ran from Royapuram.
District formation: In 2019, Ranipet was declared the headquarters of the newly formed Ranipet district, created by trifurcating the Vellore district.
Geography and transport
Location: Ranipet is situated about 115 kilometers west of Chennai and 26 kilometers east of Vellore.
Connectivity: The town lies along the Mumbai–Chennai arm of the Golden Quadrilateral, which is a major National Highway (NH 48).
Topography: The district consists mainly of plains with small hillocks. The seasonal Palar and Ponnai rivers flow through the area.

Industrial hub: Ranipet is a key industrial center in Southern India, with a diverse manufacturing base.
Leather industry: The town is a major hub for leather tanning, with hundreds of tanneries producing finished leather and export-quality leather goods such as shoes and garments.
SIPCOT: The State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT) Industrial Park is a major industrial area that also hosts chemical, engineering, and automotive component industries.
Other industries: Various other small-scale businesses focused on tool-making and chemicals also operate here.
Key attractions
Navlakh Bagh: A notable grove of trees spanning three kilometers along the Palar River, said to have contained "nine lakhs" of trees, giving it the name "Navlakh Bagh".
Memorial of Raja Desingh's wife: Located on the banks of the Palar river, this 18th-century memorial is recognized for its Mughal architectural features.
Ratnagiri Balamurugan Temple: An important pilgrimage site located on a small hillock about 15 kilometers from Vellore.
Sholinghur Narasimmar Temple: This pilgrimage center is home to a Narasimmar Temple, with inscriptions dating back to the 14th and 17th centuries.
