The Simmons Railway Wheel Set Measurement System (WSM-440) is a robust and dependable machine that automatically inspects new or reconditioned railcar wheel sets. Various wheel set parameters are measured and the data is stored electronically. The machine can function as a standalone machine and the measurement results can be stored to a database hosted locally on the machine, or it can be networked to transfer the data to a database hosted remotely on the customer’s server. The WSM-440 can also interface with wheel shop automation systems to automatically route the wheel set based on the measurement results.
The WSM-440 is capable of measuring the following dimensions on an assembled railroad wheel set: wheel diameter and width, flange thickness and height, wheel rim thickness, deviation of measured wheel profile from standard profile, wheel back-to-back, and plane and radial wheel tread run out.
