The Original Chocolate Cookie Wasn't Oreo

Most people today assume that Oreo was the first chocolate sandwich cookie.
In reality, Oreo entered a market where the format already existed.
In 1908, four years before Oreo, an American company called the Loose-Wiles Biscuit Company introduced Hydrox, widely recognized as the first chocolate sandwich cookie in the United States. It used two chocolate biscuits with a cream filling in between — a structure that would later become iconic. At the time, Hydrox was well known and commercially successful.
In 1912, the National Biscuit Company (later known as Nabisco) launched Oreo in New York City. Oreo did not introduce a new type of cookie. Instead, it entered an existing category — but with a very different strategy. Rather than competing mainly on taste, Nabisco focused on name simplicity, visual design, consistent packaging, and large-scale distribution.
Over time, Oreo benefited from a brand identity that felt easier to remember and easier to market. The name “Oreo” was short and distinctive. The packaging looked cleaner and more uniform. Most importantly, Oreo was strongly associated with milk, turning a cookie into a repeatable habit rather than a one-off snack.
As Oreo expanded nationally and then internationally, Hydrox gradually lost shelf space, visibility, and cultural relevance. This shift was not driven by a sudden change in product quality, but by how effectively one brand positioned itself in consumers’ minds.
Today, Oreo is sold in more than 100 countries and is widely described as the world’s best-selling cookie. The common belief that Hydrox copied Oreo is a result of brand dominance rewriting public memory — not historical sequence.
This story is not just about biscuits. It shows how branding, naming, and distribution can determine which product survives in history.
