Tree Rings and Kent Hovind; Cosmogenic Events of 774 and 993 Recorded in Tree Chronologies

Описание: How reliable are chronologies constructed from counting tree rings? According to a popular creationist, completely worthless. Kent Hovind has recounted a story of a walking stick maker who observed his 7-year-old trees had more than seven rings as smoking gun evidence that trees ring can't be used to date historical events. Does his story cast doubt on the entire science of dendrochronology? No, but his from of rhetoric, using a vague example to cast doubt on the mature field of study is certainly effective. Hovind has told his stories for years and whether they are apocryphal or based on real events, there is little chance that he will ever change his story since they are very effective at convincing those who wish to believe them.
I use his story as an opportunity to talk about a recently published research paper in which a cosmic event witness by humans in the year 993 are traced to a spike in C14 in the annual rings of trees alive at that time. This in turn has allowed numerous other events occurring near this time to be dated with great accuracy because the 993 ring can be identified in timbers used to construct buildings. Another event in 774 also is recorded in trees rings around the entire world. These two human-witnessed events on known dats dates also allow us to test the accuracy of tree ring chronologies over the past 1400 years. As you might guess, tree-ring chronologies are shown to hold up very well to this new test of their accuracy.
