Paul - Today, we're going to install the roof and gutter deicing kit, which is comprised of the heat cable and the clips, you need to take care of those trouble areas on your roof.

Bryan - Right, it'll prevent the ice dams which can damage your roof, cause leaks into the house. Tear your gutters off, all of that. So, we'll get this installed. It's very simple. And away we go.

Paul - Be sure to do this project before you have problems. While it's dry and warm. And then you won't have ice dams when you have your first snowstorm.

Bryan - Make sure you have a GFCI outlet where you can plug in the heat cable.

Paul - So it's a fairly simple procedure to install the Frost King heat cable. So, you're going to take the beginning of your cable and you're going to start from the top of the roof at the spot where it begins to go from the overhang to the warm area of your roof, and you're going to clip it on to the shingle.

Paul - OK, so for starters, I'm going to insert the cable into my first clip and add it to the roof here on the edge.

Paul - And you're going to clip it with the clips provided - it's very simple. And when you put the cable in the clips, you can bend them by hand or with pliers to hold it tight.

Paul - I'm now going to start my first triangle by inserting the clip under the third shingle. And if you find that that is too tight to get the clip under there, you can loosen it with a putty knife.

Paul - Then you're going to run a zigzag pattern in concentric triangles.

Paul - I was able to get that one in and I will put the cable in the clip and then run it back down to the bottom, and I will grab my next clip….

Paul - And at the base of the triangle, you're going to want it to be about 15 inches wide.

Paul - So at the bottom of your triangle, you're going to take your cables that come together and run them through this clip.

Paul - I'm just going to fold over the cable loosely like that and take these other clips and insert it inside, and loop it over, and now that clip can be hung. When you come back through your final pass from the clip, that will be on the shingle, Like that, and you're going to you can tighten these so that they don't come loose during your work.

Paul - This clip so that I have some hanging down about halfway into the gutter, and I'm just going to hang this clip right on the one I installed on the bottom shingle.

Paul - So now I'm going to begin my next triangle and we just repeat the same process.

Paul - Now I've come to the end of the section of the roof that I want to protect from an ice dam, and I need to make sure that that section is covered not only with the triangles that we have of the heat cable on the roof, but we also need to make sure that we de-ice the gutter so that the warmer water that runs off has a place to run. So I'm going to run this cable back down along the gutter and down the downspout so that it keeps it free of ice and snow.

Paul - We're going to connect it to the little loop that we had made, the bottom of each shingle so that it's hanging in the downspout and it's actually not sitting on the bottom of it like that. And I'm going to pull the cable back underneath this bracket.


Paul - So now when I get to the end of the run, I'm going to put the end of the heat cable down through the downspout.

Paul - That's the installation. It's not very difficult, but you want to make sure you have the proper ladder and do the install when conditions are dry and safe.

Bryan - Right. And no more ice dams.
