The MV Wilhelm Gustloff was a German military transport ship sunk on January 30, 1945, by a Soviet submarine in the Baltic Sea. It was evacuating civilians and military personnel from East Prussia and the German-occupied Baltic states. The sinking resulted in the largest loss of life from a single ship sinking in history, with an estimated 9,400 people perishing.
