RSS controversy Modi
The RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh) was founded in 1925. During the freedom struggle (1857–1947), RSS leaders and volunteers did not play a major or direct role in fighting against the British. Unlike Congress, Subhash Chandra Bose’s INA, Bhagat Singh’s HSRA, or other revolutionary groups, RSS mostly focused on cultural and social organization of Hindus.
Historical records show:
RSS did not participate in Quit India Movement (1942).
Its leaders advised members not to confront the British directly.
After independence, RSS gained influence mainly in social & cultural mobilization — not in achieving independence itself.
So when PM Modi said RSS is the “world’s biggest NGO” and implied its contribution to independence, that is more of a political statement than historical fact.
👉 In short: RSS worked for social organization, but had little to no role in freeing India from British rule.
