The Western Snowy Plover nests along only a few open beaches between Heceta Head and Cape Blanco, including Bandon State Natural Area, New River, and Floras Lake. Their numbers dropped to fewer than 50 birds in Oregon by the early 1990s due to beach development, invasive beachgrass, and disturbances on the dry sand where they nest.

Today, the species is rebounding thanks to long-term efforts from Oregon Parks, BLM, and U.S. Fish & Wildlife — restoring bare sand, marking protected zones each spring, and monitoring nests through the season. These beaches are still limited and carefully managed, and Bandon remains one of the key locations where the plovers continue to recover.
