This video looks at how a home machinist with limited equipment can determine the type and hardness condition of unmarked steel in their shop. These tips and tricks are for the home machinist so they require little or no specialized equipment. A glass bead and a small cylinder are one example of very simple things that can be used to determine (with a good degree of accuracy) the hardness of steels (and most other types of metal). A spark test using only a bench or pedestal grinder can define the carbon content and the type of an unknown piece of steel. These are just two (of many) examples of how simple equipment that is usually found in a home shop can be used to identify steels. Many home shop projects are doomed from the beginning because the material chosen from the scrap bin is not the right material for the job. After all, most steels look alike and this video will help you to identify the right type of steel for the job at hand. This video is part of a free online machine shop course accessible to everyone on my webpage THATLAZYMACHINIST.COM . No sign up, no subscription and no hassle, it's all free and always will be. As for all of my machine shop videos, this video is specifically produced for novice machinists.

Thanks for understanding that I am a professional toolmaker and teacher but I am not a professional video producer (and it shows). I produce these videos for fun as a little retirement project that lets me give back a little of what was passed on to me by so many amazing trades people, most of whom, sadly, are no longer with us.
