The Chinese zodiac is composed by twelve animals, that each year is represented by a different animal. The cycle repeats each twelve years. During each Chinese New Year, we celebrate and welcome the new zodiac. And 2024 will be the Year of the Loong.
In the mind of Chinese people, the Loong is recognized as a mythical creature capable of summoning wind and rain that flies through the clouds. Chinese emperors used to claim themselves as the son of the Loongs, and every citizen is believed to be a Loong's descendant.
The story of Loongs has been passed down over thounds years in China, from the mythical cultures of the Yangshao to the present day. People believe that the Loong brings good fortune along where it goes. Therefore, on the first day of the Year of the Loong, I invite my fellow Loong friends and families, to come together to pray and wish each other a year of prosperity and success: may the Loong soar in the sky, and bring prosper!
Allow me to introduce my Loong friends:
Ying Loong: An ancient divine Loong, also known as the Ancestral Loong, Yellow Loong, or Earth Loong. He is the highest-ranked and most powerful Loong, representing the ultimate evolved form of all the Loongs.
Qing Loong: In ancient China, the starry sky was divided into 28 constellations, each seven of them forms a mythical creature. The seven constellations in the eastern sky form the shape of a Loong, which is known as the "Qing Loong."
Zhu loong: The god of Mount Zhong, inhabiting the frigid northern regions. When his eyes are open, it is daytime; when they are closed, it is nighttime. His breath brings the world winter and summer, and he governs light and fire.
Shen Loong: The Loong born from the sea, capable of creating illusions and famous for conjuring mirages, gathers the fishes to help fishermen with fishing.
Jiao Loong: A water-dwelling creature, cjust one step away from becoming a real Loong. Usually found in ponds or rivers far away from human settlements.
Ao Loong: During the era when civil examination exists, the stone steps of the emperor's palace were engraved into the shape of the head of Ao Loong. Only those who achieved the highest scores were allowed to step on it, symbolizing academic achievement. Today, Ao Loong's figure is widely used in the decorations of Chinese shrines and temples.
Pan Loong: The fifteenth and the youngest son of the East Sea Loong King. He has the ability to control clouds and rain, and he governs the change of the weather. Pan Loong is known for his kindness and willingness by helping others, thus he is deeply loved by people.
Ao Guang: The Loong King of the East Sea, one of the divine beings ruling the seas. As the head of the four sea Loong kings, Ao Guang controls the four seas, governing rainfall, thunderstorms, floods, and tidal waves. The Loong king has subordinates such as toad generals, shrimp soldiers, and crab lieutenants.
Ao Qin: The Loong King of the South Sea, believed to be the incarnation of the fire god Zhu Rong. Ao Qin is responsible for thunder and lightning.
Ao Run: The Loong King of the West Sea, controlling air currents and capable of creating winds and rainstorms, bringing coolness to the climate.
Ao Shun: The Loong King of the North Sea, the smallest among the four sea Loong kings. Ao Shun governs winds, frost, rain, snow, and ice.
I hope this provides a better understanding of the Chinese zodiac and the significance of the Year of the Loong.
