THIS VIDEO: Robert Frank described Jungjin Lee's pictures as "landscapes without the human beast". He was referring to the poetic power of her work and how the pictures reflect her inner being. Lee was a student and assistant to Frank and - both shared the belief that an image acts like a poem that can returned to repeatedly. Her images carry a visual silence and they encourage a contemplative response -as one quietly interacts with the elements of the earth. Lee’s photography developed out of grounding in Korean calligraphy and ceramics – and she brings a delicate handcrafted quality to her work. The surface of her prints has a sense of texture and physicality. She says that she wants to produce something that goes beyond the photograph – so that viewers can interact with the work as an object.
I'll spend a little time on her printing process because it’s integral to her work. Instead of using commercially produced photographic paper, she prints from her negatives onto large sheets of handmade rice and mulberry paper . She prepared the paper by coating the surface with a liquid photosensitive emulsion. She doesn’t mechanically reproduce multiples of each image - but creates each work as an original handmade object. She applies the liquid emulsion onto the paper using large brushstrokes
