I've been spending some time recreating the director code as well as figuring out how the work. Directors seem to be overhead managers in FFXIV. While they don't do much on the client, they probably were where the bulk of a content's script was located. Client wise the main thing they are used for is kicking off events post-zone as well as used to send info about the content when you clicked the "paper/pen" icon.
With them implemented, the cutscene that happens just before the battle tutorial now fires off correctly.
Also implemented are "Private Areas". These are sub-instances in a zone used for phasing. The area after the battle, and certain "echo" areas (called AreaMasterPast) are used during certain parts of quest; separated from other players. These private areas are also used for raids and occupancy (dungeons) areas as well.
