San Francisco 49ers player George Kittle honors late Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir in playoff game against Philadelphia Eagles
San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle paid a heartfelt tribute to legendary guitarist and Grateful Dead co-founder Bob Weir during Sunday evening’s playoff matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles. Kittle honored the late musician by wearing cleats with the message “Dead Forever,” a nod to Weir’s lasting legacy and influence. The tribute came just one day after Weir’s passing at the age of 78, following a cancer diagnosis in July 2025. His family confirmed the news in a statement shared on his official Instagram account, noting that he died “peacefully” while surrounded by loved ones. The statement cited underlying lung issues as a contributing factor in his battle with cancer. Despite the emotional moment, the game took a difficult turn for Kittle, who suffered a torn Achilles. Even so, the 49ers rallied to secure a victory against the Eagles. Kittle is a well-known Deadhead and has frequently spoken about his love for the band on his podcast. Weir had previously sent the tight end a care package, further solidifying a unique bond between the Bay Area music icon and the current 49ers star.
