The General Grant Tree is located in the General Grant Grove area of Kings Canyon National Park. It is the largest giant sequoia in the grove and the second largest tree on earth when measured by trunk volume. If branch volume were included, it would rank as the third largest tree in the world, with the President Tree taking second place. The trail is heavily visited and is a 0.75 mile loop with about 50 feet of elevation gain.

The General Grant Tree was named in 1867 to honor Ulysses S. Grant. It stands 268 feet tall and measures 40 feet in diameter, making it the widest known sequoia in existence. It is estimated to be around 1,700 years old. In 1926, President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed it the Nation’s Christmas Tree. In 1956, President Dwight D. Eisenhower designated it as a National Shrine, a living memorial to Americans who fought and died in war.

Along the trail you will also find the Fallen Monarch, a large hollow sequoia that you can walk through. It is a fun and unique stop.

Just beyond the General Grant Tree is Gamlin Cabin. Built originally in 1872, it has been reconstructed and relocated several times. The cabin has served many purposes over the years, including use as a storehouse by the U.S. Cavalry and later as housing for the first park ranger stationed in the area.
