Grandma’s 5.8kg Silver Carp Surprise | Cozy Ukrainian Village Life & Fire-Cooked Fish Soup

She wasn’t expecting such a gift, but her reaction is pure joy. Soon the whole family gathers in the courtyard to clean the fish, surrounded by curious cats, playful puppies, and children laughing as they explore the giant carp.

Because of the long daily power outages we currently have in Ukraine — sometimes up to 17 hours without electricity — parts of this video were filmed during twilight and low light. The atmosphere is real and authentic: soft evening shades, a dim courtyard, and the warm glow of the fire as the family cooks together.

The next day, Grandma prepares the fillets for salting while Dad fixes a large cauldron so the family can cook a real Ukrainian fish soup (yushka) over an open fire. The kids bring onions, peppers, and tomato paste, helping wherever they can. Smoke rises into the cool evening air as the soup slowly simmers, filling the yard with comfort, warmth, and the unmistakable aroma of fire-cooked food.

Meanwhile, the family prepares the wood-burning stove for the night — clearing ash, bringing firewood, and warming the house. When the yushka is ready, everyone gathers in the kitchen to enjoy its rich smoky flavor, made with love and shared in the cozy glow of an autumn evening.
