The festival of Dusshera, also known as Vijayadashmi, celebrates the victory of good over evil. Ravana kidnapped Devi Sita and abducted her to Lanka. As a result of this deed, Lord Rama killed the Demon king Ravana. ‘Dussehra’ is comprised of two words Dus and Ahara. ‘Dus’ means ten and ‘Ahara’ means day.
In some parts of India, Dussehra or Vijayadashami is celebrated to commemorate Goddess Durga's victory over Demon Mahishasura. Since the battle between Goddess Durga and Mahisahasura lasted ten days, Vijayadashami is observed on the tenth day. As the name suggests, Vijayadashmi means the tenth day of victory.
