Scouting is an important component of any plant protection program because scouting allows the greenhouse producer to assess the population dynamics or numbers of individuals associated with an insect or mite population in time and space. Scouting can also help in timing applications of pesticides (e.g. insecticides and miticides) and determine when and where insects are entering greenhouses. There are two types of scouting: passive and active. Passive scouting involves placing yellow sticky cards among the crop to capture the adults of certain insect pests (e.g. western flower thrips, fungus gnats, shore flies, and whiteflies). Active scouting is associated with conducting visual inspections of plants parts such as, leaves and flowers to detect the presence of certain insect and mite pests (e.g. mealybugs and twospotted spider mites), and life stages (e.g. eggs, larvae/nymphs, or pupae). The implementation of an effective scouting program will help to maximize the effectiveness of pesticides and/or biological control program.
