Every new gate—Hawkins Lab, Starcourt Mall, Vecna’s ritual—feeds it more data to update its replica. The vines aren’t plants; they’re neurons. The entire Upside Down is one gigantic brain wearing a dead Hawkins as a mask. Anyone who spends long enough inside starts changing too. Microscopic particles embed in their nervous system, creating a permanent quantum link to the hive mind. Agents, kids, survivors—Will, Eleven, Nancy, Steve, and others—come back carrying a piece of Dimension-X inside their own brains.​

Foundation records trace it back to 1943’s Project Rainbow, when a failed military experiment accidentally created an empty pocket reality.
