In celebration of Peer Review Week 2025, a panel led by Renaud Joannes-Boyau (Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research), explores how artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming academic peer review. Keynote speaker Professor Mark Hughes (Editor in Chief Australasian Journal on Aging) was joined by Professor Nigel Andrew (Chair of Science and Editor-in-Chief Austral Ecology), Dr Joanne Bradbury (Human Research Ethics Committee), and Clare Thorpe (Director SCU Library). Panellists discussed both the opportunities and risks of AI in research publishing and the future of peer reviewed academic literature.
The conversation highlights AI’s potential to improve efficiency, equity, and consistency in peer review, while also raising concerns about bias, loss of human judgement, and ethical challenges such as data privacy and intellectual property. The panel stresses the importance of transparency, disclosure, and maintaining human oversight in critical evaluations. They also address the difficulties of recruiting reviewers and adapting to new AI-powered editorial systems.
The session concludes with a call for ongoing dialogue, robust guidelines, and education to ensure integrity and trust in the evolving research landscape.
