Products like ChatGPT – which answers complex questions – and Midjourney – which creates vivid imagery – are so human-like that they have captured the world’s imagination. AI excitement has found its way to mental health, where scientists and developers are racing to create AI-based tools that can assess, diagnose, and treat mental illness at a previously unimaginable scale. Early efforts are both impressive and promising, but with them come real risks of harm. A measured approach will be needed to create AI tools that are safe and effective for the vulnerable millions across the world who urgently need mental health care.
