Flic-en-Flac is the village of the west coast having the longest public beach. The village is accessed through a secondary road from the Black River motorway, after the village of Bambous, while driving from Port Louis to the south.
Flic-en-Flac is also the busiest touristic village after Grand Bay with a wide range of fine cuisine restaurants and luxury hotels, some of which are among the best of the island. Following the trend in tourism development, this small village, which used to be a fishing village, can now pride itself of having luxurious shopping complexes, pubs, casinos and healthcare clinics with top notch facilities.
One cannot speak of Flic-en-Flac without mentioning its fine white sand beach with crystal clear water. The lagoon is well protected from the high waves from outer sea by an lengthy coral reef. Residents of the Plaine Wilhems usually come here for open-air camping or just to relax during the week-end under the shades of the tall filaos trees.
However, during the months of June to September, in the winter period, the beach is much less crowded as the sea water temperature goes down to nearly 20ºC, even if visitors coming from the northern hemisphere find it reasonable for swimming.
It is worth mentioning that it was in Flic-en-Flac that one of the first luxury hotels of Mauritius was constructed in the 1970's and today Flic-en-Flac and Wolmar village (which is found next to Flic-en-Flac) have no less than eight luxury hotels, the area being topmost in terms of hotel establishments density in Mauritius.
