An English and Irish habitational surname denoting a person from Burgh or Burgh Castle in Suffolk, England. The word Burk represents an Anglo-Norman pronunciation of Old English word burg or Old French de Burca, meaning ‘”fortification”.

PROGENITOR(S)
William de Burgh (1160-1206) was the founder of the House of Burgh in Ireland, appointed Governor of Limerick by King Henry II, granted vast estates in Leinster and Munster. He was the elder brother of Hubert de Burgh, 1st Earl of Kent and Geoffrey de Burgh, Bishop of Ely. He had three sons:

The Burke Baronetcy of Glinsk in the County of Galway was a title created in the Baronetage of Ireland in 1628 for Sir Ulick Burke, son of Edmund Bourke and grandson of Sir Hubert Bourke (c. 1522-1598)

The Burke Baronetcy of Marble Hill in the County of Galway was a title created in the Baronetage of Ireland in 1797 for Sir Thomas Burke, who raised an infantry regiment at his own expense during the Napoleonic Wars, son of John Burke (d. 1793) and grandson of Thomas Burke (d. 1714). He was succeeded by his son, Sir John Burke, 2nd Baronet, who was High Sheriff of Galway in 1838 and a Member of Parliament for Galway.

Ulick na gCeann Burke, 12th Clanricarde, was created Baron of Dunkellin and Earl of Clanricarde in the Peerage of Ireland in 1543.

Richard Burke, 4th Earl, was created Baron of Somerhill and Viscount Tunbridge in 1624 and Baron of Imanney, Viscount Galway, and
Earl of St Albans in 1628, all in the Peerage of England.

Ulick Burke, 5th Earl, a Catholic Royalist who had overall command of the Irish forces during the later stages of the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland, was created Marquess of Clanricarde in the Peerage of Ireland in 1646.

Henry de Burgh, 12th Earl, educated at Eton College, Member of Parliament for Galway, was created Marquess of Clanricarde in 1789.

Henry de Burgh, 13th Earl, raised and commanded the 88th Regiment of Foot, Governor of Kingston-upon-Hull, and noted cricketeter, was created Earl of Clanricarde in 1800.

Ulrick be Burgh, 14th Earl, British Ambassador to Russia, Postmaster General, and Privy Counsellor, was created Marquess of Clanricarde in 1825 and Baron Somerhill in 1826.

John Bourke was created Viscount Bourke in Clanmories in 1629, he was the son of the 3rd Earl, died at Dunsandle, co. Galway, Ireland

Baron Leitrim was a title in the Peerage of Ireland which was first created in 1583 for Seán mac an Iarla a Búrc, and became extinct in 1591 on the death of his son, Redmond Burke, 2nd Baron, in 1602
