The Jet design development. Hudson dealers requested a ‘compact’ car. Millard Toncray, Chief Engineer is credited with the Jet Design. Frank Spring was very disappointed in the Jet design. The first Jet rendering by Spring included many of the Italia’s features: sloped hood and deck, low fenders with air scoops over the lights, smoother, more rounded lines, and doors cut into the roof-line.
The horizontal crease in the Jet hood about two-thirds of the way down its nose is Frank’s original hood line. Another crease in the rear deck lid marks Frank’s original deck height. The rear window was patterned after the 1952 Ford.
The Jet chair-high seats were copied from the Fiat as directed by Mr. Barit. The Jet wheelbase and track dimensions are very similar to the Fiat 1400. Mr. Barit also wanted high fenders and Oldsmobile-style taillights.
Styling may have been influenced by the 1952 Ford. The 202 engine was based on a modified Commodore 8 engine which allowed the use of existing tooling.
Automotive testers agreed that the only all-new U.S. car for 1953 was ”quicker that its competition, solidly built and eminently practical though unpretty.” Road and Track praised comfortable seating, good visibility and driving position, quality of fit and finish inside and out.
The Monobilt body contained 5000 welds. Raised bumps on the grill indicates the 1954 model. The bodies, without paint, glass or trim, were built by Murray Corp.
The Jet was the favorite Hudson-built automobile of Stuart Baits. Hudson invested $12,000,000 to bring the Jet to market. AMC spent $11,000,000 to liquidate the 150 outstanding Jet contracts
