This sonatina is a deeply personal work. The images evoked in each of the three movements (Pealing Bells, Canção de Saudades, Feast Day) constitute a portrait of a happy time and place, where church bells ring in the village square, lovers sing to one another whether together or apart, and family and friends congregate on holidays for meals and sharing joy. It is a work about people being together, being present with one another, and cherishing those moments in our lives that make us us.

The second movement in particular is written for my wife, Cassia. It is grounded in the rhythm and feel of Bossa Nova, a style that developed out of Brazilian samba and has since been imitated by many American jazz musicians. The B section (which might be interpreted either in 3/4 or 6/8) quotes the song "Pela luz dos olhos teus" ("By the Light of Your Eyes") as recorded by Miúcha and Antônio Carlos Jobim, which we waltzed to at our wedding reception. The third movement was our ceremony recessional and was first performed by Steven Felix (trumpet) and Jonathan Wessler (organ) in 2019 at First Lutheran Church, Boston, MA. Many thanks to Steve and Jonathan for performing the completed Sonatina in February of 2024 for this production!!
