Satellites for a Safer Tomorrow
Italian and European Technologies for Natural Hazard Resilience and Economic Innovation
The event celebrated the Italian National Space Day, remembering the launch of the first Italian satellite, San Marco 1, in December 1964.
The Sentinel-1D satellite, part of the European Copernicus program, was successfully launched on 4 November 2025, completing the Sentinel-1 family. Italy plays a major role in the Copernicus program. Thales Alenia Space is the prime contractor of the entire series of Sentinel-1 satellites, on behalf of the European Space Agency (ESA). Leonardo contributed with numerous sensors and instruments including Autonomous Star Trackers for attitude control and power units. Data will be received and processed, among others, by the Matera Space Centre in Italy, operated by e-GEOS.
Sentinel-1D is equipped with a C-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) capable of imaging the Earth’s surface day and night, in all weather conditions, with a resolution of up to 5 m and a swath width of 400 km. Its strategic data allows environmental monitoring, emergency management, and climate change research. The satellite will also strengthen maritime monitoring and security capabilities.
During this hybrid event in Jakarta, we hosted online presentations from Italy, together with in-person presentations by Indonesian researchers using Sentinel satellite data in Indonesia.
