In this video, Dr. Kanika Sharma, Clinical Head and Senior Consultant in Radiation Oncology at Dharamshila Narayana Superspeciality Hospital, Delhi, sheds light on the role of radiation therapy in treating cervical cancer. Cervical cancer, which affects the mouth of the uterus and is one of the most common cancers among women, is primarily treated with radiation therapy, especially in advanced stages.
Dr. Sharma explains that cervical cancer typically has four stages. In stage 1, surgery or radiation therapy can be used, with both treatment options providing similar results. As the cancer progresses to stage 2, radiation therapy becomes the preferred treatment method, particularly when surgery is no longer feasible. In some cases, radiation therapy is combined with surgery to prevent recurrence.
For advanced stages, Dr. Sharma elaborates on the different types of radiation treatments. Radiation therapy is administered as external radiation, typically for 4-5 weeks, followed by internal radiation (brachytherapy) for better treatment outcomes. For patients with stage 2B to stage 4A cervical cancer, radiation is often used in combination with chemotherapy, known as concurrent chemotherapy, typically involving cisplatin-based drugs.
Dr. Sharma also discusses how advanced radiation techniques like IMRT (Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy) help minimize damage to healthy organs such as the bladder, rectum, and intestines. Brachytherapy is also performed, with various options tailored to each patient's needs.
While radiation therapy can lead to some side effects, such as nausea, vomiting, weakness, and burning sensations during urination, Dr. Sharma emphasizes that these symptoms are managed through medications and lifestyle modifications.
