pH is the measurement used to determine the relative alkalinity, acidity or neutrality of a solution. All other things being equal, the higher the pH, the better the cleaning. There is a 10-fold increase in alkalinity or acidity for each pH unit increase. Also, the lower the pH, the more stable the dyes in carpets, rugs and upholstery.
Have you ever noticed that nearly all detergents are alkaline? Why? Because most soil is acidic!
SECTIONS IN THE VIDEO:
• pH stands for “Power of Hydrogen.” All other things being equal, the higher the pH, the better the cleaning. The lower the pH, the more stable the dye. (0:24)
• pH chart showing relationship between pH and alkalinity or acidity. pH goes from 0 to 14 with 7 neutral.
• 1% ammonia has a pH about 11. (1:27)
• The upper limit for Stainmaster and stain-resistant nylon carpet is 10. (1:39)
• TSP, a common wall cleaner, has a pH at 1% of about 12. (2:02)
• 1% PCA™ Formula 5 has a pH of about 9, well below the upper limit for stain resistant nylon carpet. (2:23)
• Milk is slightly acidic. (2:36)
• Boric acid eye drops have a pH around 5 - acidic. (2:38)
• Beer and grape juice have a pH around 4. (3:01)
• Vomit is very acidic with a typical pH around 2. (3:05)
• Every pH unit change is a 10-fold change in alkalinity or acidity. (7:07)
