The BMW M2 Competition is a Frustrating Drift Machine - One Take

I want to love the BMW M2 Competition so badly. And I should love it; it has a lot going for it. It’s the right size; about the same size as the ideally shaped E46 M3. It’s got a hot, twin-scroll turbocharged engine from the M3, making a touch over 400 horsepower. It has monstrous brakes that, at 15.7” in diameter, are bigger than the wheels on the E28 M5. And it has a slick manual gearbox that, in a world where those are dying off like the last speakers of a dead language, should be commended purely for existing at all. In fact, it’s much better than that: BMW’s manual is still one of the best in the business.

And yet, I just don’t love it? Maybe it’s because I now see the similarities with the Toyota Supra, which, when driven back to back, are many. Maybe because, at 3,500 lbs, 400 horsepower doesn’t feel overwhelming. And maybe because it feels like it’s always fighting the weight? When I drove the regular M2 on track, it seemed a riot, but here, with this car, and this (pardon the pun) competition, The M2 Comp falls short of ideal. But it still gets drifty, and that’s fun for a video.
