On the steppes of central Kazakhstan, archaeologists have opened a rare, undisturbed Begazi–Dandibay tomb from the late Bronze Age. Inside, a young man and woman were carefully laid face-to-face, surrounded by gold ornaments, fine jewellery, bronze tools, ceramic vessels, and even horse bones and bridle gear.
The Begazi–Dandibay culture is known for its megalithic mausolea and elite kurgan graves, but most have been looted or disturbed. This intact burial offers a rare look at what high-status life – and death – looked like on the steppe, and upcoming DNA and isotope studies could reveal where this couple came from and how they fit into wider Bronze Age networks across Central Asia.
