In the late 19th century and early 20th century, a number of Muslim immigrants came to Calcutta from U.P in search of better opportunities. Haji Allauddin from Sitapur was one of them. He landed up in the Colootala area and started going around door to door selling batasha. Some years later, he opened his shop on Phears Lane.
In the initial days, Allauddin would stock gond ka halwa or battisa halwa, a sweet dish with 32 ingredients in it like gond, makhana, various dry fruits, nuts and herbs. Battisa halwa along with gulab jamun and mawa laddoo are still their best sellers and you won't find these sweets else in the cityil during Ramzan anywhere else in.
After Allauddin, his son Nasiruddin and, thereafter, his son Nizamuddin introduced many more sweets - patisa, milk halwa, walnut halwa, gajar ka halwa, dudhiya halwa and halwa sohan. The shop sells Kanpuriya laddu and Karachi halwa too. During Ramzan, they sell alu palak, chicken and mutton samosa, malai kachori and meetha singara. These items are only available during this time and you need to go after 4pm.
