Lawmakers in Canada have voted to expand the country's assisted dying regime. The amendment will allow individuals who fear losing mental capacity to make advance requests for medical help to end their lives. Voicing her support for the legislation, Senator Pamela Wallin, a member of the Canadian Senators Group who proposed the amendment, said in part, "As someone with a history of dementia in my family, I seek the peace of mind that an advance request and consent to it will provide." Chairman of the Discovery Institute Center on Human Exceptionalism and consultant to the Patients Rights Council, Wesley Smith, joins to share his view on this new legislation and on the idea of allowing people to make written advance requests for medical help in ending their lives. Smith explains the dangers with this and what his concerns are. With seven U.S. states currently considering bills that would legalize assisted suicide for terminally-ill patients, Smith gives his perspective about what is behind this and what is at stake. He has said, "Resisting assisted suicide and euthanasia isn't about winning, but saving lives." The chairman of the Discovery Institute Center on Human Exceptionalism talks more about that and how best we can do that.
