Explore Ponce DeLeon Inlet
Part C - In the Atlantic
by Prof. Robert George Mertens, Ph.D.
In this third installment on our surface exploration of Ponce de Leon Inlet, we have returned from the Atlantic Ocean in the little, 11-foot Palamino, and have anchored in the rushing waters of the inlet, the tide going out, and are wrestling with how to get ashore without damaging the motor. People are walking and playing along the inlet on the south side, and fishing on the north side.
In 1821, Florida was ceded to the United States by Spain.
The first lighthouse was built in 1834, on the south (New Smyrna) side of the inlet, and was destroyed by native Americans and a storm.
The present day lighthouse was built in 1887, replacing the old lighthouse. This lighthouse has been designated a National Historic Landmark in 1998.
In 1928, this inlet, formerly called Mosquito Inlet, was renamed Ponce de Leon Inlet.
Florida inlets are occasionally dredged in order to make and keep them navigable by pleasure boaters, fishermen and commercial shipping companies.
Ponce de Leon Inlet is part of the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW), that runs 3000 miles, along the Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico.
In order to help avoid shipping hazards and to create safe havens along the U.S. coast, and having commercial, military and (before the advent of electric/electronic communications systems), communications importance of the ICW was established in 1787.
It has grown ever since, and requires constant maintenance, management of bridges and waterways, and is an important part of our national infrastructure.
